Captivating stories that feed your imagination.
Hello, and thanks for visiting my site.
The Christmas Truce of 1914 has always been a source of great fascination to me, and the idea of writing a fictional story set during this remarkable and historic event has danced around my head for the better part of two decades. The thought that opposing groups of men, thrown together and made to endure the most atrocious conditions, can lay down their weapons and come together in the name of Christmas showcases the very best of humanity. There remains so much to be learned and admired from their momentous actions.
It reads like the stuff of romanticised legend, but the WW1 Christmas Day Truce happened in multiple locations across the Western Front. While some hastily arranged ceasefires lasted but for one glorious day, others continued for weeks — much to the utter disdain of the Military hierarchy on both sides. Leading up to Christmas 1914, young men faced not only shell and shot, but also the fury of an unrelenting Belgian winter, enduring the most atrocious conditions that became part and parcel of life in the trenches. Holed up in flooded ditches of desperation, home must have felt a lifetime away for slowly hardening and heavy hearts. But whilst languishing in the spectre of death, their determination to mark the passing of Christmas remained steadfast.
The significance of the Christmas Day Truce should not be underestimated, or its legacy diminished. It stands proudly as a great source of hope and inspiration in a world that forever grows more volatile. One can never comprehend the scale of suffering endured, or how it felt to pick up their rifles following that Christmas and take aim at enemies now regarded as friends.
During two years conducting research, I immersed myself in a host of books, films and documentaries that referenced the Christmas Truce. I also toured the Belgian battlefields and war cemeteries in the Flanders region, and spent time at the magnificent In Flanders Fields Museum. I found the whole experience emotional and humbling. I'm delighted to produce what I hope is a story that fittingly pays homage to this momentous occasion and the brave souls who risked and gave their lives. I sincerely hope that you enjoy reading it, and welcome your feedback — either good or bad! You can find me on social media, or contact me through the newsletter below.
This is my second novel, following the release of Coffee Shop Girl in 2020. Prior to that, I have written multiple children's books, poetry, and even lyrics to the odd song. I'm a proud Grandfather to Nirvana and Neveah, a staunch Liverpool supporter, and a self-confessed Elvis fanatic — a passion I share with my beloved daughter, Chantelle. I've enjoyed visits to Graceland, Tupelo, and my favourite city, Nashville.
